Kyoto's Sannenzaka slope, dusk, 2009

This watercolor sketch depicts the historic streetscape of "Ninenzaka" (Ninen-zaka) in Higashiyama, Kyoto, at dusk. It captures the contrast between the faint lingering glow of sunset in the sky and the warm lights beginning to illuminate the shops along the street. With its depiction of the stately appearance of traditional houses and the way light reflects off the cobblestones, this piece allows you to feel the unique tranquility and atmosphere of Kyoto. By completing it in a single sitting within a day, I have preserved the nuances of the atmosphere and shifting temperatures of the scene directly onto the paper.
