The sun-drenched neighborhood of Kobe Kitano

This watercolor sketch depicts the sloping streets of Kitano, Kobe, an area also known for its historic foreign residences. I captured the expansive view looking down from the top of the hill toward the sea, as well as the vibrant contrast of light and shadow cast by the sun onto the sloping road. The colorful roadside trees and the presence of people walking up and down the hill evoke the exotic yet gentle everyday rhythm unique to Kobe. I wanted to create a sense of immediacy by capturing the scene with loose, sweeping brushstrokes.
